Sports are an irremovable part of society. It would be quite difficult to imagine a society that does not have any form of sports for friendly competition. In fact, it would be a very different world indeed.
Since their inception, sports were generally introduced to entertain first, and encourage competition second. People always gather around and have fun while watching a certain sport. Through sports, they burn away their free time and enjoy themselves.
Sports are also a way for people to socialize. People meet new friends and fellow fans in every sports match that they attend. For example, fans of a certain football team band together and give their support to their team. Along the way, they socialize and meet with each other even for just once in a while. You can say that sports are particularly effective at uniting those of different personalities and outlooks in life into one event of solidarity.
Some people also view sports as avenues for their self-development. Some athletes do have that intention in mind, and winning gold or bronze in any event may be relegated to second concern for these people. That is because being in a sport teaches a person several important values like perseverance, determination, and the spirit of fair play as well as humility.
Last but not the least, are also the health benefits of sports. Sports are extreme exercises by nature. They require great efforts in order to learn as well as the discipline to go to practice everyday or whenever the schedule dictates it. With sports, people improve not only their bodies but also their emotional health as learning sports and the skill to play in one can be a source of self-esteem for a person.
